Topic Suggestion 1: Flash vs Fundamentals. In the prequels we saw very flashy choreography, and the reverse grip keeps coming up, yet in Rebels, and the new films, we see a return to no nonsense fighting. For example Vader vs. Kanan in Rebels was fewer blows, lots of time in the bind, yet very intense, and Vader shows why the most important thing to do in a sword fight is hold center. Yet the flashy Sith Darth Maul dies to Kenobi in Rebels, because he gives up center with what is essentially a hail marry hilt bash to the face, and all Kenobi has to do is hold center.
Topic Suggestion 2: Stances and Guards. What is a stance, what is a guard, define both and compare/contrast. Also, the Obi Wan Soresu stance, which we do see similar positions in some real world Martial Arts and TPLA, is this for example, a stance, a guard, both, neither, a taunt perhaps? Furthermore, just because something is a stance or guard, should you fight with it, and if so, when?
Topic Suggestion 3: Weapons Locker Live/Tools of Training. Favorite Lightsaber hilts, old and new, plus favorite swords, steel/metal weapons, sharp or blunt, as well as favorite training weapons such as bokken, sticks, etc.
Kiai and other types of yells would be interesting to hear a discussion about.
The Kendoka in me fancy's the subject, but it's piece of a pie really. Breath/breathing techniques would be a more appropriate topic I think. For example D. Nonymous could talk about breathing techniques in Kung-Fu, Darth Telos could talk to breathing techniques in Boxing, Nero Attoru can address the same in fencing, Vidnyl for Jiu-Jitsu, myself for Kendo, which uses Kiai prominently. That's something to bring the entire brain trust into, and could be a really informative show.

I have a couple of suggestions for us corporate dads and moms.
Unfortunately I am struggling finding large chunks of time for practice because of my work and home responsibilities. Usually I have about 20 min in the morning, 20 min in he afternoon, and maybe 20 minutes at night if I am lucky. What can I do with 15 minutes that would be beneficial for a beginner? Also what warmup exercises should be done before a short practice or does a warmup matter?
Idea # 2
For people who travel (sometimes abroad), practicing isn't easy. Also I have not tried flying with a lightsaber, is there any concerns with bringing a lightsaber? How do you pack it since the blades are so long? Can using a fold up blade work while on the road? How can you practice in a hotel room or where are some safe places to practice while on the road? What else should be considered while traveling?
If I think of more ideas, I will let you know.

Idea # 1
I thought of another idea.
Training tools like dummies, bags and man sized cutouts were used in my other training. What training aids can be used for lightsaber combat?
If you have the luxury of having a partner, what are some good ways to train and practice with a partner? Is it more observe and help or actually have low/light impact practice sessions with each other? Is sparring gear always required at all times? Also is a softball pitching helmet enough or do you need a kendo style helmet? I am sure that there is more that can be fleshed out from this.
I Hope that this helps. If I think of more tpla live ideas, I will post them.

I’m interested in joining the academy. I live near Ann Arbor. Do you have monthly meetings? Or how can I get in contact with you?
Greetings! There are threads for information here on the forum and you can message us here. But if you are on Facebook, follow our page and ou will see the events for our weekly classes. They happen every Saturday from 1:15-2:15 at Liberty Athletic Club. We also have four hour workshops (the next one coming up in a week on Chinese longsword).

Mitchell Theron Patrick: Hello, I’m new to the idea of lightsaber dueling and I still need to get a lightsaber. I was wondering if TPLA still conducts classes as I live in Michigan.

Dark Angelus: Greetings to all. I am already in a class called River City Jedi. Learned so much already and they do use TPLA as part of their guide lines and forms.

Furiora Helseare: I know, was crazy for me to see as well, although I'm not a huge fan of the rules... honestly never liked "right of way" in fencing. If people score a double neither should count, you're both dead
Mar 2, 2019 13:57:27 GMT -5
Furiora Helseare: "right of way" doesn't exist in a real fight, I don't care if it's "your turn to attack" if I see an opening I can take, I'm taking it.
Mar 2, 2019 13:58:45 GMT -5
Nero Attoru: Right of way has some roots in realism, since attacking is given priority (which makes sense given the fact that the attacker would theoretically strike a killing blow first)
Mar 6, 2019 16:15:21 GMT -5
Nero Attoru: Regardless, epee is a weapon that most people forget, and doesn't use right of way! Two hits gives each fencer a point, reflecting the double kill.

cyclingswitch: I get why they went with that system though. If you watch Saber Legion fighting instead, it becomes more akin to kendo. It's realistic fighting but it doesn't look like Star Wars anymore.
Mar 23, 2019 20:34:49 GMT -5
cyclingswitch: In Saber Legion, moving your saber around more than you need to to thrust, parry or do a quick strike to the waist or head is basically giving away a point. At least that's what I've seen in the matches I've watched with their style.

Colin the Grey: Hey guys, whenever someone can find the time to go over my second Shii-Cho formula primer submission, that'll be a huge help. My free time is going to go down hard in a month or so, and I'd like to make more progress in the meantime. Thanks!
