Hey everyone, I recently received a suggestion from one of our esteemed Apprentices, and wanted to get it going here on the forum. She had some ideas for TPLA Live shows (which have recently returned to our channel), and wanted to share them. On that note, I wanted to encourage ALL of you to submit your ideas! Keep in mind, our Council may have several decades worth of martial arts experience, but at the end of the day... we're a bunch of dorks, and love to discuss all kinds of topics related to Star Wars and lightsaber combat.
Anyway, please feel free to post your ideas here! Don't be shy, there are no ideas too silly for us to consider at least.
I done put these in the thread D. Nonymous started, but here they are again.
Topic Suggestion 1: Flash vs Fundamentals. In the prequels we saw very flashy choreography, and the reverse grip keeps coming up, yet in Rebels, and the new films, we see a return to no nonsense fighting. For example Vader vs. Kanan in Rebels was fewer blows, lots of time in the bind, yet very intense, and Vader shows why the most important thing to do in a sword fight is hold center. Yet the flashy Sith Darth Maul dies to Kenobi in Rebels, because he gives up center with what is essentially a hail marry hilt bash to the face, and all Kenobi has to do is hold center.
Topic Suggestion 2: Stances and Guards. What is a stance, what is a guard, define both and compare/contrast. Also, the Obi Wan Soresu stance, which we do see similar positions in some real world Martial Arts and TPLA, is this for example, a stance, a guard, both, neither, a taunt perhaps? Furthermore, just because something is a stance or guard, should you fight with it, and if so, when?
Topic Suggestion 3: Weapons Locker Live/Tools of Training. Favorite Lightsaber hilts, old and new, plus favorite swords, steel/metal weapons, sharp or blunt, as well as favorite training weapons such as bokken, sticks, etc.
I think effectively if we can "work" or at least think a bit on advance on the topics who will be treated during the Live it can help to have a better content to show (and, for the non native english speakers, maybe we can be "better" ^^).
Maybe we can discuss about how we can improve our pedagogic materials ? Put some priorities on these improvements (per example filming a new teaching video but which forms/achievements need it first ?) ? What we can propose to help to attain a better (self)training ?

Since I m new here in this awesome group and become an apprentice, I have a huge questions. I do swordfighting and Star Wars choreographies for decades and now my STAUFERLÖWEN group has the offer to perform at German Comic Con 2019 in June in Stuttgart Germany.
We do our flashy Star Wars shows and show a bit of Talhofer & Lichtenauer swordfighting but here is my question:
I want to spread the word in Germany and so I ask politely if I can show lightsaber fencing wit TPLA rules and promote TPLA in Germany? Would be awesome.
Desalon Manshad: Hello! Lately my arm has been feeling better, so I should be good for doing some more primer training

BRAWLER: Hello all! Summer is here in full swing! I hope everyone is taking advantage of the beautiful weather and getting outside for their saber practice! Hope to see everyone post up online, what we've been working on.

BRAWLER: Hello Darth Revic! How goes the training?

Furiora Helseare: Because I'm still struggling with the saber position due to my huge gut (that I will one day get rid of), is the saber required to be facking backwards during front stance?

BRAWLER: Keep at it Furi!! Slow and steady friend, progress will come! 😊

Mitchell Theron Patrick: Hello, I’m new to the idea of lightsaber dueling and I still need to get a lightsaber. I was wondering if TPLA still conducts classes as I live in Michigan.

Dark Angelus: Greetings to all. I am already in a class called River City Jedi. Learned so much already and they do use TPLA as part of their guide lines and forms.

Furiora Helseare: I know, was crazy for me to see as well, although I'm not a huge fan of the rules... honestly never liked "right of way" in fencing. If people score a double neither should count, you're both dead
Mar 2, 2019 13:57:27 GMT -5
Furiora Helseare: "right of way" doesn't exist in a real fight, I don't care if it's "your turn to attack" if I see an opening I can take, I'm taking it.
Mar 2, 2019 13:58:45 GMT -5
Nero Attoru: Right of way has some roots in realism, since attacking is given priority (which makes sense given the fact that the attacker would theoretically strike a killing blow first)
Mar 6, 2019 16:15:21 GMT -5
Nero Attoru: Regardless, epee is a weapon that most people forget, and doesn't use right of way! Two hits gives each fencer a point, reflecting the double kill.

cyclingswitch: I get why they went with that system though. If you watch Saber Legion fighting instead, it becomes more akin to kendo. It's realistic fighting but it doesn't look like Star Wars anymore.
Mar 23, 2019 20:34:49 GMT -5
cyclingswitch: In Saber Legion, moving your saber around more than you need to to thrust, parry or do a quick strike to the waist or head is basically giving away a point. At least that's what I've seen in the matches I've watched with their style.

Colin the Grey: Hey guys, whenever someone can find the time to go over my second Shii-Cho formula primer submission, that'll be a huge help. My free time is going to go down hard in a month or so, and I'd like to make more progress in the meantime. Thanks!
