Finally getting back to this after WAY to long being away... and a need has presented itself quite dramatically. :-)
My daughter and I were fooling around after seeing Ep VIII, banging our sabers around in the driveway. Having fun... and WHAM, took a hit right on a knuckle.
Followed by more hits to the hands, primarily, and a close call to a cheek.
We're both trained martial artists, so we know how to pull punches, but we're not experienced with swords or sticks. Very different. And we stopped before someone got hurt, but I suddenly have a need for gloves and a fencing-style mask.
So... What's the best that doesn't cost and arm and a leg? I tried my sparring mittens and they don't really work very well, grip is not good. I'm thinking hockey gloves would work well, but what's the best for the face? Hockey mask? Fencing mask? Kendo gear?

Hey Karmack, sorry I missed this thread (although I caught it over on Saberforum). Hockey and lacrosse gloves are excellent, worth the investment. In particular, keep an eye out for ones on sale or clearance, you can save a LOT of money that way. For the face, the best starting option is a fencing mask (I recommend epee). This is the one I've bought for many of my students (both in fencing and lightsaber combat), it's very inexpensive and provides great protection:
Desalon Manshad: Hello! Lately my arm has been feeling better, so I should be good for doing some more primer training

BRAWLER: Hello all! Summer is here in full swing! I hope everyone is taking advantage of the beautiful weather and getting outside for their saber practice! Hope to see everyone post up online, what we've been working on.

Furiora Helseare: Because I'm still struggling with the saber position due to my huge gut (that I will one day get rid of), is the saber required to be facking backwards during front stance?

BRAWLER: Keep at it Furi!! Slow and steady friend, progress will come! 😊

Mitchell Theron Patrick: Hello, I’m new to the idea of lightsaber dueling and I still need to get a lightsaber. I was wondering if TPLA still conducts classes as I live in Michigan.

Furiora Helseare: I know, was crazy for me to see as well, although I'm not a huge fan of the rules... honestly never liked "right of way" in fencing. If people score a double neither should count, you're both dead
Mar 2, 2019 13:57:27 GMT -5
Furiora Helseare: "right of way" doesn't exist in a real fight, I don't care if it's "your turn to attack" if I see an opening I can take, I'm taking it.
Mar 2, 2019 13:58:45 GMT -5
Nero Attoru: Right of way has some roots in realism, since attacking is given priority (which makes sense given the fact that the attacker would theoretically strike a killing blow first)
Mar 6, 2019 16:15:21 GMT -5
Nero Attoru: Regardless, epee is a weapon that most people forget, and doesn't use right of way! Two hits gives each fencer a point, reflecting the double kill.

cyclingswitch: I get why they went with that system though. If you watch Saber Legion fighting instead, it becomes more akin to kendo. It's realistic fighting but it doesn't look like Star Wars anymore.
Mar 23, 2019 20:34:49 GMT -5
cyclingswitch: In Saber Legion, moving your saber around more than you need to to thrust, parry or do a quick strike to the waist or head is basically giving away a point. At least that's what I've seen in the matches I've watched with their style.

Colin the Grey: Hey guys, whenever someone can find the time to go over my second Shii-Cho formula primer submission, that'll be a huge help. My free time is going to go down hard in a month or so, and I'd like to make more progress in the meantime. Thanks!
